Stories Deserve Care

I’m Becky Clapham, an author, science teacher, and freelance editor, specialising in emotionally-driven fiction across romance, fantasy, romantasy, paranormal fiction, and speculative storytelling.

As both a writer and editor, I understand how vulnerable it can feel to hand your work to someone else. My approach is collaborative, thoughtful, and honest: I don’t believe in stripping the personality out of a manuscript, but in helping authors strengthen the story they’re already trying to tell.

I specialise in character dynamics, pacing, emotional payoff, continuity, readability, dialogue authenticity, and narrative structure, with experience supporting indie authors through developmental edits, copy edits, proofreading, and authenticity checks.

Writers I work with often describe my editing style as encouraging, clear, and respectful. I care deeply about helping authors feel supported throughout the editing process while still receiving detailed, constructive feedback that pushes the work to its strongest possible version.

Whether your manuscript needs structural refinement, sentence-level clarity, or a final polish before publication, my goal is always the same: to help your story resonate as powerfully as possible while staying true to your voice.

Big-picture editing focused on strengthening your story’s structure, pacing, character development, readability, and emotional impact. This includes identifying plot holes, continuity issues, weak story beats, and areas where characters, tension, or worldbuilding could be developed further.

Developmental Editing

Reviews

I've been using Becky's proofreading and editing skills for approximately 18 months. My writing has really benefited from her ability to see a scene in her mind's eye and ‘watch’ for inconsistencies. Becky's suggestions have been insightful, helping to develop my plots and cut out the unnecessary waffle.

Becky offers a professional service, keeping to the timelines set for edits, and is approachable. She's happy to discuss her suggestions and allow me to bounce ideas off her, bringing the best out of my work. It's a pleasure to have her on hand to encourage and enhance my writing.

Becky was amazing in editing my debut novel as well as a co-written project. She was clear with suggestions and any fixes that were needed. She took control of any major grammar mistakes and really helped nail down the tone and pace of our novels. She is communicative in every aspect and never makes you feel bad with her suggestions. She has a way of critiquing and complimenting at the same time that makes her extremely comfortable to work with.

Becky has been in my corner since day one. She has edited both current books in the Hornets Nest series as well as my stand alone reverse harem and the first book in the Whiskey River book. I am working against the system with Dyslexia making my rough drafts a little rough. Becky has never shown anything but patience and understanding with me. She has taken the time to teach me tricks and rules that ultimately have made me and my books better.

She is kind, attentive and her advice is always sound. She gives you the space to make magic and then polishes it to perfection for the reader world. I could spend hours gushing over all of the things she’s done for me. She is an incredible friend and I trust her with every story I create.

Becky was so easy to work with, on the ball and thorough with her editing. She really helped me make Gold Rush the best it could be and I can’t wait to work with her on future projects!
